NBA betting odds are something that people should know how to read and calculate if they wish to be involved with wagering their money in it. Unfortunately, not a lot of people know how. The most common style of odds used in North America is called American Style Odds which is also used for NBA Betting, NFL betting and other sports.Most online sportsbooks list their odds in American Odds and it’s used in NBA Betting. It is very easy to understand and is actually easy to read. Let’s show an example:
Boston Celtics (+150)
Miami Heat (-140)
The numbers that are in the brackets indicate the odds. The American Odds have two components to them, the first being the positive or negative sign, and the second being the number that follows the sign.
The signs on the odds or numbers before them indicate if you would have to pay more in order to win less of what you have wagered or win more than what you were expected to wager. It also has something to do with the outcome of the game. If the sign is negative before the number then it means that it is likely to happen (meaning the team winning) and if it’s a positive sign then the team winning is less likely.
The number after the negative sign indicates how much money you would have to bet in order to win $100. In the above example, in order to get $100 by betting on the Heat then you must be willing to bet $140 dollars and hope that the Miami Heat would take victory so you can get your $100.
You can easily substitute the $100 bet for a $10 bet by moving the decimal place over one spot, showing us that you would need to wager $14 in order to win $10 in profits.
On the other hand, if the sign before the number is positive then the number after the positive sign is the amount that you can win if you bet $100 and the team wins. In the example above, betting $100 on the Celtics will give you a profit of $150 if they win.
NBA betting odds is rather easy to understand and if you know other sports betting odds then you know NBA betting odds. They use the same odds in different sports too so don’t worry about being afraid to learn other types of odds with different sports.
